I like the focus on the interrelationship between race and gender, which is certainly central to the text. I would avoid a binary like “racism or sexism,” since a) it leads to too simple an answer and b) one can never separate the two. But a question that asks how these two problems are interwoven in the text (for example when the “coon hunters” interrupt Cholly’s attempts to have sex for the first time, and he transfers his rage to the girl) will lead to a strong essay.
